Martin Luther King was shot dead at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Throughout the Movement, Martin Luther King had stood as “a pillar of hope and a model of grace”, become a leader from the mid-1950s.

Significance: In response to King's assassination, there were outbreaks of racial violence as it caused an outpouring of anger among Black Americans. President Johnson called a national day of mourning, reflecting his nationwide importance.
