The British were planning to seize the minutemen that had been gathering in Boston so they left at night. But the Americans had caught wind of this and warned the colonists. When the Brits arrived 70 minutemen were waiting but upon seeing they were outnumbered they left though some were still shot and killed. After finding no more, the Brits went back. On a bridge, they were met with around 300 minutemen. In the end, the British were forced to retreat because the colonists used the area to their advantage.
This was referred to as the start of the American Revolution.
