Diversity in sport
Mildred Didrikson was a notable female athlete from America. She was an Olympic gold medalist who later founded the Ladies Professional Golf Association and set numerous world records. She qualified for five events during the 1932 Olympic qualifying trials;however, women could only compete in three events. She won a gold medal for the javelin throw, breaking the previous record with 143 feet. She won another gold medal the next day after breaking the 80-meter hurdle world record with a time of 11.7 seconds. The judges disqualified her technique after a fiercely disputed tie for first place in high jump and awarded her the silver medal instead.
She is still the only athlete, male or female, to have taken home individual Olympic medals in the throwing, jumping, and running events. Her athleticism changed the way women were viewed in sport and encouraged those after her to go for their dreams. Her Golf association provided women with an outlet to play the sports they loved
