1 Jul 1968 Jahr - Non-Proliferation Treaty
Beschreibung:
Signed on the 1st of July 1968, the Non-Proliferation Treaty was a landmark international treaty that was signed by over 62 states, most significantly the Big Three of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. Now signed by over 190 states, the treaty has more signatures than any other arms prevention and disarmament agreement, something which expresses how significant the treaty is. The treaty worked to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, as well as promoting the cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The goal of the treaty was to also further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament, as well as complete disarmament overall.
The Treaty was a significant achievement for both the Cold War and the World as a whole, as it set a precedent for international cooperation between nuclear and non-nuclear powers, something which has deterred many countries from developing nuclear weapons, and had a tremendous influence in slowing the proliferation of weapons across the world. With the Non-Proliferation treaty significantly decreasing the risk of Nuclear War, it allowed tensions to ease slightly between the Soviet Union and the United States, and paved a path for the cooperation between the two superpowers and for the end of the Cold War.
