American capture of the volcanic island Iwo Jima. The Japanese had created tunnels and strongholds underground on the island, leaving American Marines to bomb and use grenades to clear out the Japanese, who fought fiercely and lost many. Was important because it showed how hard the Japanese were willing to fight, and how rough the war really was.
