The Patriot Act enabled the FBI to secretly conduct a physical search or wiretap on American citizens to obtain evidence of crime without proving probable cause. The official title of the USA PATRIOT Act is "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) Act of 2001. It enabled investigators to gather information when looking into the full range of terrorism-related crimes, including chemical-weapons offenses, the use of weapons of mass destruction, killing Americans abroad, and terrorism financing. It has helped investigators identify, dismantle and disrupt many terrorist plots.
