Founded by by Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Dwarkanath Tagore as a reformation of the prevailing Brahmanism of the time (specifically Kulin practices), and it launched the Bengal Renaissance of the nineteenth century, which pioneered all religious, social, and educational advancements of the Hindu community.

It was contemporary India's first intellectual reform movement.
