Anthony Hampton had five sons. One son, Preston met with the Cherokee for peace talks with the new Patriot government of South Carolina. Preston stopped at his father house to discuss his trip. The Cherokee arrived in the yard, Preston recognized a chief and went to met him. As Anthony Hampton walked out into the yard, Preston was shot by a Tory and Anthony was tomahawked in the head. Anthony's wife was also killed with a tomahawk to the head. Hampton's daughter, Elizabeth visiting a friends house heard the whoops and they rode close sneaking up to observe. Elizabeth watch a Cherokee holding her infant by the feet, bash its head against a tree, killing it. They rode to Fort Weed for help. The Cherokee also kidnapped a nine year old grandson.
