The night before attacking Vince's Fort, Cols Chaney and Williams force of 150 Tories stopped at the home of Adam Woods, killing him and destroying everything. Patriot Capt Tarleton Brown lived near by and upon hearing the gunfire, gathered three men and rode to support Cook. On arrival, he observed a large Tory force so they hid near the house until the Tories departed. Brown recognized both Cols Chaney and Williams as they rode away.
