As Lord Cornwallis moved his army toward Charlotte Town, he learned Patriot Col Thomas Sumter's Brigade was camped on the eastside of the Catawba River at Biggers Ferry. Lt Col Lord Rawdon was dispatched with the Volunteers of Ireland, British Legion Dragoons and infantry under Maj George Hanger to find and attack Sumter. The evening of the 25th, Sumter moved his camp to the westside of the river. The morning of the 26th, Lord Rawdon's force arrived at Biggers Ferry. Sumter had placed his riflemen to protect both the ferry and a ford to prevent the British from crossing. A skirmish ensued across the river but Sumter's riflemen were able to prevent the British from crossing frustrating Lord Cornwallis efforts to reach Charlotte Town.
