2 Jun 1780 Jahr - Raid on John Land's House (Gaither's Old Field)
Beschreibung:
Patriot Capt John Land and seven of his militia stopped at his house to rest for the evening posting a sentry at the door. Local Tories learned of his stay so a party of 30 Tories approached the house taking two old men and three boys prisoner to prevent them warning Land. The sentry observed their approach, firing at them and warning all in the house. The Tories charged the house but were repulsed and driven off by heavy fire from the Patriots. Second in command, Lt Lewis Yarborough was mortally wounded and captured. The Tories retreated to Brtitish headquarters in Camden delevering the three boys as their prize capture in an attempt to show their skill and daring. The old man and Lt Yarborough were left along the wayside.
