Col Abraham Buford and his 350 Virginia Contentials were marching to reinforce Maj Gen Lincoln at Charles Town. When Lincoln's surrenderedCharles Town to the British, Buford was ordered back to Hillsborogh, North Carolina. Sir Henry Clinton, British commander learned of Burford's movement and order Lt Col Banastre Tarleton to pursue the Contintenals. Tarleton's Legion and mounted infantry caught up to Burford in the Waxhaws near the North Carolina line. The afternoon of May 29th, Tarleton engaged Buford's Contential with a cavalry charge. Buford ordered his line to hold their fire until the British were within ten yards but the fire was ineffective . Once overrun, Buford ask for quarter for his men but Tarelton's men condinuted the slaughter. Of Burford's force of Contintenals, 113 were killed, 150 wounded, 250 captured. Many of those killed and wounded due to sword and bayonet attacks. After Buford's massacre, Lt Col Tarleton became known as "Bloody Ban" and the Patriot battle cry became "Tarleton's Quarter" which meant no quarter.
