As General Moultrie withdrew his army towards Charles Townin the face of British Gen Provost’s advancing army, he assigned L Col John Laurens to act as a rear guard action against British. Lt Col Lauren’s instead chose to make a stand at the Coosawhatchie River Bridge. Laurens removed the bridge planks and deployed his riflemen on the east side of the river. The British occupied the houses on the west side for cover and deployed their artillery against Laurens troops. Lauren’s was wounded, his horse killed so he placed Capt. Thomas Shubrick in command. Capt. Shurbirck recognized his plight and began the withdrawal of the troops toward Charles Town.
