Patriot Gen Barnwell was ordered to destroy the rice supplies on Hutchinson Island. Loyalist militia destroyed the boats Gen Barnwell was to use prior to his arrival. Gen Barnwell ordered his brother, Lt Col Edward Barnwell to take a small force and destroy the rice. Lt Col Barnwell approached by land but was fired on near Rochester's Ferry losing five or six men and many captured forcing his retreat.
