On 4 December 1302 the patriarch of Aquileia Ottobono de 'Razzi gave the right to Baron Guglielmo di Waldsee, viscount of Mels, a knight of ancient Swabian lineage, to build a new castle "de novo et facere domum magnam" on a hill of family property near the ancient Mels manor house.
The castle, built "six steps high from the ground and two arms large", completed after the death of Guglielmo by his three sons Asquino, Bernardo and Vicardo who first took the surname of Colloredo Mels Waldsee, constitutes a typical example of a "residential" castle built for defensive needs in the center of the fiefdom as a stable and safe residence.
Increasingly enlarged over the centuries, it underwent a slow and constant replacement of defensive features with more properly residential ones.
Richly decorated by Giovanni da Udine in the mid-sixteenth century, the famous study of the castle of Colloredo is one of the most significant artistic-decorative moments of the manor.
