25 Mai 1810 Jahr - May Revolution
Beschreibung:
With the absence of the King Ferdinand VII of Spain, a revolution took part in the territory of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. The first autonomous government is established (Primera Junta), freedom from the Spanish Empire is gained. The Primera Junta pretended to be the legitime sucesor of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata and take control of all its territory. The revolution overthrew the government of the viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros, and didn't recognize the authority of the Council of Regency of Spain and the Indies (a Council that made the governmental decisions of Spain in its overseas territories, during the occupation by France, until Ferdinand VII proclaimed himself king again). Most of the territory of the viceroyalty agreed with the decision of the Junta, with exceptions of the governments of Montevideo (Uruguay), Upper Peru (Bolivia) and Paraguay (they were part of the Viceroyalty too), and decided to keep obeying the Council. So then, in the next years, the army of this new and young nation, the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, started military campaigns to liberate those territories from the Spanish monarchy. The revolution worked as a declaration of war too, marking the start of the Argentine Independence War
