Hitler had turned his armies towards southern Russia in the hopes of capturing oilfields and the industrial city of Stalingrad. But the German army was forced to surrender 108,000 troops to the Soviets. Only 5,000 of those troops would see the end of the war. At a cost of 2 million casualties on both sides, the Battle for Stalingrad was the first significant loss for the German army and would be the beginning of the Soviet drive on the Eastern Front to push the Germans all the way back to Berlin.
