The stalemate played a very significant role in the 1952 election. Candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower promised if he got elected he would end the war. When peace talks failed after he was elected, he said he might introduce the idea of nuclear weapons. Along with this and the death of Stalin, the communists agreed to settle the conflict. On July 27, 1953, the two sides signed a cease-fire which is still in effect today.
