After the Roman withdrawal from Britain, the native Celts felt vulnerable, having no army of their own. They invited the Jutes from Denmark to protect Britain from other invaders.

However, the Jutes attacked and invaded Britain, driving out the Celts. This resulted in there being very little Celtic remaining in English.
