1 Jan 1885 Jahr - Sheldon Jackson appointed General Agent of Education in the Alaska Territory
Beschreibung:
Sheldon Jackson was a Presbyterian minster who established churches and mission throughout Alaska. His most lasting legacy was the active suppression of native languages and efforts to erase traditional practices and beliefs. For example, Jackson would attempt to "buy" children from desperate native families for 1-5 years, during which time they would attend his schools, which were designed to 'Christianize and westernize' them. When this practice was deemed illegal by a judge his school populations decreased signficantly.
