The United States navy shelled the Tlingit village of Angoon after a dispute arose from an whaling accident that resulted in the death of a Tlingit shaman. In accordance with traditions, the village had taken a white hostage and required an indemnity of 200 blankets to compensate for the loss. After the shelling the village, naval Capt. Merriman demanded a counter-indemnity of 400 blankets, which he received.
