An expansionist president. Wanted California to be a part of the US. Used Manifest Destiny to rally people to believe that California was meant to be apart of the US. The term Manifest Destiny allotted providence. This became a pretext to the Mexican American War. He thought that no one would stay his push for California. Many mutineers revolted against the war he wanted to start. The main goal of his presidency was to get California to be apart of the United States. He set up a vote to start the war in congress and some congress members voted against the war was because they thought of it as an excuse to get more land for slaves. Most citizens were for the war, holding support rallies and parades and with many joining the army. During the war many commit sedition as they do not believe in what the government is trying to do. When citizens stopped signing up to be soldiers the government had to give a reward to serve in the military. The problem was, Mexico paid better. After the war with Mexico, the U.S. govern-
ment brought California and other new territo-
ries into the Union as nonslave states. In return,
the government had to do something for the
slave states, so it passed the Fugitive Slave Act of
1850. This law made it easy for slave owners to
recapture runaway slaves even after they had freed to the Northern states. It made it easy for slave owners to just pick up free blacks they claimed had run away.
