Sheikh al-Mani, the prominent scholar, also played a crucial role in bringing forth a change of attitude towards the education of women by issuing a fatwa (religious edict) to the ruler of Qatar in 1957. He declared that the education of girls was not contrary to the teachings of Islam, and by the late 1970s attendance of boys and girls at schools was almost equal.
