A renegade MacDougall named Alan McCoul who was an illegitimate cousin of Sir John and a nephew of Donald Balloch of Islay,.

Alan seized our Chief and imprisoned him "in festynans" on the Isle of Kerrera possibly in a plan to starve him to death and succeed him.

When the Earl of Argyll, Sir John's feudal superior, heard that he had been taken prisoner and was likely to be killed, the Earl attacked Kerrera, burned Alan McCoul's ships, and killed nearly one hundred of Alan McCoul's men. McCoul escaped with four or five followers and Sir John was released.
