Les Paul invented multi-track recording as we know it today back in 1951. He used multiple 2 track recording machines to record many different sounds on different instruments, bass, drums and backing vocals etc., then he and his wife Mary ford performed “How high the moon” over the pre-recorded instruments to make it sound like they had a full band and backing vocalists behind them, when really it was just the two of them. This blew many people’s minds and within 10-15 years this was the standard, bands like the Beatles and the rolling stones used 4 track machines in the 60’s.
