21 Feb 1916 Jahr - Germany begin the attack on verdun

Beschreibung:

The Battle of Verdun was a World War I battle in which the French repelled a significant German onslaught from February 21 to December 18, 1916. It was one of the war's longest, deadliest, and most brutal engagements, with around 400,000 French and 350,000 German losses. Erich von Falkenhayn, the German Chief of General Staff, had prepared it to ensure Germany's triumph on the Western Front. The goal was to defeat the French army before the Allies could fully deploy their forces. The fortress of Verdun and its surrounding fortifications along the Meuse River were chosen because they endangered the major German communication routes, they were a key component of the French defenses, and the loss of such a historic castle would be devastating to French morale. On February 21, the Germans began a tremendous bombardment of a front stretching 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the Bois d'Avocourt to Étain at 7:15 a.m., and the first German infantry offensive was started at 4:45 p.m.
