14 Jul 1958 Jahr - Iraqi Revolution
Beschreibung:
the Iraqi revolution of 14 July 1958. In a sudden coup, a clandestine group known as the Free O$cers seized control of the police headquarters, the radio station, and the royal palace in Baghdad. The rebels killed King Faysal II and his uncle, Abd al-Ilah, as well as Nuri al-Sa’id; and declared Iraq a republic. Most Arabs rejoiced at the monarchy’s downfall, but the West was horri#ed. The new regime seemed the embodiment of Arab nationalism and Communism combined, a triumph for Nasir, a harbinger of the fate awaiting Jordan and Lebanon, and a stalking horse for Soviet imperialism in the Middle East. Despite its opposition to the tripartite attack on Nasir in 1956, Washing- ton now considered invading Iraq.
