In October of 1989, the Communist leader Erich Honecker was ousted in East Germany. East Germans were fleeing the country through Hungary. When the government fell on November 9, the government issued exit visas to anyone who asked. Citizens immediately began breaking down the Berlin Wall which had been built in 1961 as a division of Germany.
