The Republican presidential candidate was Ronald Reagan and the vice-presidential candidate was George Bush. They were running against the incumbent Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter for president and Walter Mondale for vice-president. Reagan won 44 of the 50 states, gaining 489 electoral votes to Carter's 49. The Senate was also captured by the Republicans. Reagan's personality played an important role in the landslide victory for the party. Voters responded well to his promises to revive the economy, fight communism, and oppose abortion.
