JJ Thomson discovered the electron in 1904 and then proposed a model for the structure of the atom. He had utilised partially evacuated cathode ray tubes. Then he applied a strong electrical voltage between two electrodes at the tube's end. He found the electron and manipulated it so that the ball was positive and the electron emitted a negative charge.
