Thomson's student. 'Father of the nuclear age'. Shot small positively charged alpha atoms at a sheet of gold foil. Discovered that some particles bounced back whilst others past through. He concluded that atoms consisted largely of empty space with just a few electrons whilst most of the mass was in the centre part which he termed the nucleus. The alpha particles passed through the gaps but bounced back from the nucleus.
