A compromise that settled the dispute that was a result of the Election of 1876. It resulted in the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes along with the withdrawal of federal troops in the South.

As a result, African Americans would be left abandoned under racist Southerner rule for over a century, and soon afterwards, Reconstruction would end.

Redeemer Democrats were now free to do what they pleased to African Americans such as restricting civil liberties through the Grandfather clause and voting taxes in which many African Americans could not afford. In fact, because of this, only 2% of African Americans were only able to vote.
