1 Mai 1968 Jahr - May 1968
Beschreibung:
General unrest is felt in France as a result of anticapitalist students' protests that eventually came to coincide with a general strike in France, the largest wildcat strike in the countries history, with about a quarter of the country striking. This unrest coincided with similar student unrest in Germany, Italy, and the United States, and had President Charles de Gaulle actually fleeing the country at one point for fear of a revolution. Eventually, however, negotiations were met with the majority of the strikers, and new elections were arranged, which led to much of the protests subsiding, though youth unrest would continue. The backlash to May 68 would actually yield the largest Gaullist electoral victory in French history, and shrunk the Communist Party of France to a historical nadir.
