The European Coal and Steel Community is founded between the capitalist states of west and central Europe (with the exception of Austria, Spain, and Portugal) for the purposes of establishing a common market to increase market growth and establish better international trade relations. The ECSC is notable for being one of the first attempts at Europeanism, and it would lay the ground work for the later EEC and eventually EU.
