Leopold II of Belgium personally takes ownership of the territory composing the Congo Free State, which becomes one of the most overexploited and brutally run of any colonial territories. It is colonialism reduced to a single walking contradiction, the wealth being pooled in the hands of a man, ruling over a territory many times his own, for the purpose of extracting vast quantities of natural resources to fuel bourgeois life on the homefront.
