Following Victory in the Austro-Prussian War, Prussia and its allied states (with the exception of recently acquired Bavaria, Wurttemburg, Baden, and Hesse), confederated into a single political entity. This arrangement laid the basic groundwork for the later German Empire, and was one of the most economically developed states in Europe at the time of its formation. It was also notable for being a national unification that occurred without any notable liberal dissident elements, unlike Italy with Garibaldi, signaling a pivot towards conservative nationalist chauvinism that would come to dominate the latter half of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
