Pope Francis has apologised and pleaded for forgiveness for the Catholic Church's role in the residential school system in Canada, and has promised to visit the country to personally apologise to survivors.

Following private discussions between Pope Francis and representatives from the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis, all parties met with the Pope on April 1 in the Vatican.

The pope, speaking in Italian, begged God's forgiveness for the "deplorable behaviour" of Catholic Church members, acknowledging the wrongs committed against Indigenous peoples in residential schools.
