The Russian Revolution was a movement in 1917 in which the Russian population, led by communists, socialists, and other ideological groups, overthrew the despotic tzarist regime. The revolution had a first phase in 1905 after Russia lost the Russo-Japanese war badly and was humiliated on the world state. This phase was put down by the government; however because of the rebellion, a constitution was created which gave very limited power to a legislative body called the Duma.

The second phase of the revolution occurred in 1917, when Tzar Nicholas II abdicated the throne and a provisional government was created (February revolution). This government was overthrown just a few months later by more radical communists (October revolution). After this, the USSR was created.
