The riots began when four police officers, three whites and one Latino, were acquitted by a court. They were accused of mistreating the Afro-American Rodney King: King was beaten by LAPD officers during his arrest, after a high-speed chase, for driving while intoxicated. Footage of the incident shows King attempting to get up several times after being beaten by the police officers, before being beaten dozens more times, even when he was lying on the ground and did not appear to be able to offer any serious resistance. The police officers involved were accused of excessive, racially motivated violence. The resulting outrage, especially among the Afro-American population, triggered an outbreak of violence with civil war-like conditions. In the end, 53 known deaths were reported, several thousand people were injured and property damage of about one billion US dollars was caused. The traces of the Los Angeles Riots can still be seen today in South Los Angeles. Over 800 buildings were burned down.
