General Gamal Abdel Nasser started an international crisis by nationalizing the Suez Canal. Britain, France, and Israel carried out a surprise attack against Egypt and retook the canal as a response. Because of this, Eisenhower sponsored a UN resolution condemning the invasion of Egypt. This worked, and the invading forces withdrew.
