Cause (International): Empress Cixi fled the Chinese capital during the Boxer Rebellion promptly before the Eight-Nation Alliance of Western alliances intervened. Express Cixi died from mysterious circumstances after having ruled China for almost 50 years, even refusing to relinquish her throne to her son.
Effect (International): Empress Cixi's image after her death was recognized internationally including her promotion of railroads, founding of modern schools, and sending students to study overseas. The Chinese imperial system was continued under Emperor Pu Yi, but the Chinese Revolution 3 years later would end it and turn China into a Republic.
Cause (Domestic): Japan played a large role in intervening the Boxer Rebellion as part of the Eight-Nation Alliance, deploying the largest number of troops and several warships.
Effect (Domestic): Japan would eventually engage in a series of conflicts in the Second Sino-Japanese War against the Republic of China, which formed as a result of intervention.
