Frederick Douglass escaped slavery on September 3, 1838. He was born into slavery in Tuckahoe, Maryland, where he lived in the Holmes Hill Farm for the first 7 to 8 years of his life until he was moved to the main plantation, Wye plantation. He moved around from a couple plantations throughout his life before he was hired out to the local shipyards to work as a caulker. He used his new job to escape from slavery, and headed to New York.
