The Fenians also known as the Irish Republican Brotherhood opposed the British rule over Ireland. They formed a secret society in Ireland. After hearing about this many Irish soldier joined the Fenians. They began plotting invasions on the British Colonies and believed that the British colonies were vulnerable to attack and wanted to take them as hostage until Britain granted their independence. America believed that the Fenian immigrants would would spill over to British North America.
