The soundtrack of Undertale offers a unique look at the Chiptune genre during the 21st century. While most video games have moved onto high quality recording and synthesis, Undertale goes back to the roots of video game music and proves that the Chiptune style still has a place in modern video game music. The soundtrack was composed by Toby Fox, who was a self-taught musician with a love for the classic 8-bit style, and makes great use of leitmotifs in that come up in situations that are decided by the player's choices. A great example of Fox's catchy and clever leitmotifs is the track "Hope and Dreams". This song only plays if the player decides to take the pacifist route, opting to save each one of the characters they meet. Hope and Dreams contains its own unique melody but it also incorporates the themes from every character you decided to save into the original Hope and Dreams music. These themes appear alongside the character in game as they add in progressively to create a new version of Hope and Dreams. The clever use of these catchy Chiptune leitmotifs earned the adoration of several million players and cemented Chiptune as a true musical genre instead of an outdated practice.
