Les Paul influenced music recording by using a technique called overdubbing. This is where you record onto magnetic tape and then use the same tape and record again over the top of it to layer instruments and create the illusion that the instruments are all being played at the same time when they are in fact being recorded at complete different times independently of each other. The issue with this however is that the more times you over dub the lower the quality becomes. You would also have to mix the track as you went into each recording session to make sure one track isn’t too loud or too quiet as you would only have one attempt each time.
