In response to many Germans leaving East Germany, Soviet leader Khrushchev, approved the construction of the Berlin Wall, which soon became the symbol for the Cold War. When the wall was first being built, any East German who tried to climb the wall was shot on site by the many soldiers and tanks who guarded the wall.
