After WWII, Germany was split into four zones. The United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union each occupied one of these zones. The US, Britain, and France all wanted Germany to become one unified country again. Stalin didn't agree with this, so on this date he introduced the Berlin blockade. This effectively cut off all electricity, food, and supplies from West Germany. The United States countered this by sending supply planes over West Germany and dropping supplies.
