His Bent Trumpet was his signature and helped make Bebop what it was. He was described as "The sound of surprise" by 'The Rough Guide to Jazz'. His bent trumpet was also accidental from dancers dancing on it by accident and he played it and liked the sound it made. He then had someone make a custom bent trumpet for him.
