they probably did have legends about the first cataclysm when the world ended in fire, but only die hard conspiracy theorists really believed that
only this time they were actually very much correct and the world had once ended and now it was ended again
and that's what that scientific thesis was built on, and then they found actual evidence for it

anyways, cian finds the holojournal and that leads him on a path of trying to stop the next one
he starts out with noble intentions yall
before the storm, they send a relatively small group eastward into what would become argath, and one of them was probably the scientist's child or pregnant wife or smth who brought the holojournal with her/him
a select group also managed to actually get the portals to work and went through it to earth and interbred with the already existing species
