27 Apr 1907 Jahr - Amendment to Immigration Act

Beschreibung:

In 1907, not many substantive changes were made to the Immigration Act, save for two amendments. An examination of parliamentary records reveals that in this year, the Governor General expressed: “The unexpected influx of immigrants from Oriental countries into British Columbia aroused a strong feeling of opposition. A member of my Government has been deputed to proceed to Japan to confer with the Japanese Government on this subject.” As will be seen shortly, in 1908, Canada insisted that Japan limit the migration of males to Canada to 400 per year. This is in keeping with the growing measures and policies targeting Asiatic immigration that followed in the subsequent years.

In 1907, two main changes were made to the Immigration Act of 1906. First, the term ‘stowaway’ is defined and added to the definitions section found s. 1 of the Immigration Act. As well, deportation of immigrants who are criminally involved was made mores stringent, as will be seen below. The below two tables will lay out the changes between 1906 and 1907 versions.
